To what extent do peace agreements support participatory democracy? This article from the International Political Science Review analyses the provision made by post-1990 peace agreements for civil society. It demonstrates the importance of peace processes to theories of civil society. It does not, however, draw conclusions about the relationship between provision for civil society and the success of peace agreements. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of civil society organisations in transitions towards peace. more »

Cyclists Pakistani mission derailed, but not peace message - 25-12-2008 11:32:00
They were on a mission to Pakistan that went unfulfilled. The Nov 26 Mumbai terror attack put paid to the efforts of a group of 33 cyclists from India, including underprivileged children, to spread peace and child rights awareness.

After failing for 18 months to reverse the results of the 2009 Israeli election, the Obama administration, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is using a small opposition group to sell artificial peace messages to Israelis. This US-sponsored campaign is based on political advertisements with the message “that there is a (Palestinian) partner, that the problem is specifically with us.” The texts are prepared by a group calling itself the “Geneva Initiative,” and include video clips of Palestinian officials telling Israelis that there is a “window of opportunity” for reaching a peace agreement. more »
