Gorilla On Mars? - 6-3-2010 5:39:17 Classify this one under the same nonsense as the "Bigfoot on Mars" the wooden plank or Mars, or perhaps even the "Face on Mars." Just an optical illusions, folks from a very, very zoomed in image from the Mars rovers. The Sun newspaper seemingly started this foolishness on what must have been a [...] more »

Another Discovery Points to Past Water and Habitability on Mars - 18-12-2008 22:12:22 Scientists from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have made a major discovery about the history of water on Mars. The CRISM instrument, the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, on board NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has found carbonates, a long-sought-after mineral, embedded in bedrock on the Martian surface. The Phoenix Mars Lander also [...] more »

MRO: Mars Storm Chaser - 23-12-2008 18:10:57 What an incredible image of a storm on Mars! The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's main assignment is to study the surface of the Red Planet, looking for clues about the history of water on Mars. But while photographing, analyzing and mapping, it also spends time each day pursuing intense weather on Mars. Sometimes, MRO [...] more »

Mars Webcam is Back! - 26-3-2009 15:52:34 The Mars Webcam is back in action after taking a three month hiatus surrounding Mars solar conjunction. If you don't remember, or if haven't heard about this "eye on Mars" before, here is a little background: the Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) is part of the Mars Express spacecraft, ESA's Mars orbiter. Its original purpose [...] more »

Going To Mars - 30-7-2009 4:41:49 Have you taken a moment to add your name to the 2011 Mars mission?
I did, and I can prove it.
I partly did because hey, it’s Mars, and partly because one of my poker group works on the Mars Rover. I can get a lot of comedy out of “my participation” in the project. Sure, he [...] more »

Why is Mars Red? New Study Offers Surprises - 21-9-2009 13:47:03 Is Mars red due to rocks being rusted by the water that once flooded the red planet? And is the only explanation for the hematite found by Mars orbiters and studied by the Mars Exploration rovers is that water once was present in volumes on Mars? Not necessarily, says a new study. Research [...] more »

Here Be Dragons on Mars! - 10-10-2009 1:03:32 Oh no! Hopefully the same folks who went nuts over the Bigfoot on Mars don't see this one! Could there really be a dragon on Mars? Relax, its just a shadow from Opportunity's camera mast, distorted by the unusual and bumpy fusion crust surface of the Shelter Island meteorite that the Mars [...] more »

Mars Rover to Go Down Fighting - 4-1-2010 13:58:41 One of the US’ Mars Exploration Rovers is literally in a quagmire, scheduled for an eventual demise when it loses power. But it’s going down fighting, flashing a big middle finger to the robotic equivalent of death.
Five Mars rovers have been sent to… Mars. While the two launched by the Soviets (Mars 2 and 3) crashed, the next three launched by the US decades later all landed and explored the surface of the red planet successfully.
The first, the Mars Pathfinder, stopped reporting back to earth nearly three months after its July 4, 1997 landing. The newer duet of Mars Exploration [...]Post from: The Gadget Blog more »

Sand dunes march across Mars - 4-3-2010 22:39:55 I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: when I was a kid, Mars was a dead planet. Dry, frozen, with hardly any atmosphere, I always figured it wasn’t very interesting.
Heh.
Mars may or may not be alive in the biological sense, but it’s certainly active geologically! And images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s HiRISE camera [...] more »

New Robot Could Explore Treacherous Terrain on Mars - 4-2-2009 23:32:06 If you've looked at the high resolution HiRISE images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or had the chance to explore the new Google Mars, you know Mars is fraught with craters, mountains, gullies, and all sorts of interesting – and dangerous – terrain. Areas such as these with layered deposits, sediments, fracturing and [...] more »

Landforms Indicate Recent Warm Weather on Mars - 29-6-2009 15:56:06 Remember the polygon-shaped landforms at Mars north polar region that the Phoenix lander studied? The polygons are produced by seasonal expansion and contraction of ground ice, and these shapes have been found in other regions on Mars as well. New studies of images from the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter indicates [...] more »

Mars Express Spies Rocky, Chaotic Terrain on Mars - 25-4-2009 2:34:30 Wow – what a shot by Mars Express! Mars has several regions of what is called ‘chaotic terrain’. These are areas with large accumulations of rocks of varying sizes, as well as flat-topped features. These erratically shaped rocks are large, too: between 1-10 km in size. Some chaotic terrain on Mars is [...] more »

Dust Storms Picking Up on Mars - 16-4-2009 20:21:04 Just like hurricane season or tornado season on Earth, Mars has stormy seasons, too. However, the Red Planet has dust storms, and they can be whoppers, which is bad news for the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity who rely on clear skies and sunshine for power. On April 21, Mars will be [...] more »
