Westlaw browser policy Westlaw browser policy - 14-1-2009 17:19:34
According to the Law Librarian Blog there is a message from Westlaw circulating outlining a new restrictive browser policy: Westlaw access will be blocked when using Web browsers that are no longer supported by the companies that created them. The lack of support can create problems during Westlaw development which may result in a security [...] more »

Westlaw Westlaw - 23-11-2009 10:20:07
Westlaw is quite a buzz lately. Read on to find out what it’s all about. Currently in the blogosphere: During that time, LexisNexis (a unit of Reed Elsevier) and Westlaw (a unit of Thomson Reuters) have continued with their for-fee content services without much significant change. The legal world has been hit hard by the [...] more »

Westlaw Canada improvements Westlaw Canada improvements - 17-6-2009 20:49:38
I think the new name of Westlaw Canada will be easier for a lot of users (particularly American users) compared to the old name of WestlaweCARSWELL. The new logo is here: The change in name is also accompanied by some improved content. I like the fact that they have “chunked together” individual paragraphs from the Canadian Encyclopedic [...] more »

Update on Westlaw Standalone Printer Removals Update on Westlaw Standalone Printer Removals - 18-6-2009 21:42:18
After I posted yesterday about Westlaw removing standalone printers from the Puerto Rico law schools, I received an e-mail from Southern New England School of Law. This is a standalone law school which is not yet fully accredited by the A.B.A. They were told in March that Westlaw would be removing their standalone printers. When the associate director there asked why, the academic rep had no explanation and could only say that West was "redeploying resources." Again, it looks as though Westlaw is picking at the low hanging fruit when redeploying resources. They seem more comfortable on the mainland grabbing resources from the unaccredited law schools. Hardly the high road.<div class more »

Why is Westlaw treating the Puerto Rican Law Schools differently? Why is Westlaw treating the Puerto Rican Law Schools differently? - 17-6-2009 23:50:16
The only law schools that have received letters from Westlaw cancelling entirely the Westlaw standalone printer program are the schools in Puerto Rico. As far as OOTJ can tell, no other United States law school has received any letter cancelling their standalone printer program. Out of all the schools to least well afford such a slap to their student expense accounts, the Puerto Rican law schools would be near the top of anybody's list. If this decision were being made on the basis of need, why not talk about cancelling at the ivies? The decision smacks of outright discrimination. How ugly.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleuse more »

Thomson Reuters Lays Off 240 From Legal Division (Westlaw) Thomson Reuters Lays Off 240 From Legal Division (Westlaw) - 3-12-2009 21:01:25
From the Article: Dow Jones reports that the media company will lay off 240 employees from one of that division’s sub-sectors. According to Dow Jones, the cuts will come from Thomson Reuters’ legal division, which includes the Westlaw database and other information and services for legal professionals. Have You Gotten Your Westlaw Pricing Letter? Have You Gotten Your Westlaw Pricing Letter? - 10-3-2009 23:19:54
I just opened the letter from Brian Cahill, Director, Marketing Law School Libraries for Thomson Reuters. It announced an increase of a little over $4 per FTE for academic year 2009-2010. For my school, that amounts to an increase of several thousand dollars. Call me a fool, but I had hoped that with inflation running at <br />0% and library budgets being cut at every type of school, public and private, the vendors might have kept prices steady for the coming year. The letter from Mr. Cahill announces a few minor (to me, anyway) tweaks to TWEN, but otherwise doesn't allude to any major enhancements to Westlaw content or functionality. Shabby behavior on the part of Thomson!<img more »

Legal Research Revisionism Legal Research Revisionism - 24-8-2009 19:47:24
What happens in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania stays in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. That could be the new motto for that court, based on a story by Shannon P. Duffy in The Legal Intelligencer that is drawing a lot of interest among legal bloggers. The story describes the unusual terms of a personal-injury case settled while on appeal to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals: The confidential settlement in Klein v. Amtrak -- a case in which two trespassing teenagers climbed atop a parked train car and suffered serious burns when they got too close to a 12,000-volt catenary wire -- included an unusual provision that called for the trial judge to vacate all of his published opin more »

Westlaw returning printers to Southern New England Westlaw returning printers to Southern New England - 28-8-2009 19:27:30
I got a voice mail from Spencer Clough at Southern New England School of Law today saying that West is returning the printers for their Westlaw. He credits pressure from stories such as the ones here at OOTJ, but also hard work from their own academic rep. We are so glad to hear that West is returning the printers! And we hope that this story, and the similar good news at UDC mean that the policy of removing printers from unaccredited and provisionally accredited law schools has been abandoned entirely. Thank you, West, for being responsive!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14910575-4540037183082173330? more »
