Two insurance organizations in upstate New York said on Wednesday that they will offer their members and employers virtual physician visits beginning this summer, making New York the fourth state to provide these types of services. For a while, e-visits between physicians were little more than an intriguing idea. Aside from a few pioneering doctors who set up web-based e-visit technology on their own, few doctors had given the approach a try. Now, however, the notion is becoming more mainstream, with major insurers even reimbursing for these services. Generally speaking, such visits tend to be less expensive than in-office visits, paying doctors $25 to $35 with an average $10 patient co-payment.

The American Medical Association will offer the Isabel Pro diagnosis decision support system through the its new, web-based health IT platform. The system, from Reston, Va.-based Isabel Healthcare, grew out of a serious misdiagnosis that nearly killed co-founder Jason Maude's three-year-old daughter, Isabel, a decade ago. Rather than sue, Maude joined with attending physician Dr. Joseph Britto to develop and market diagnosis decision support software. U.S. physicians do not need to be AMA members to access the system via the platform, which will go online early next year. It's currently being beta-tested in Michigan. more »
